1 Corinthians
Introduction
The thoughts and note material given on these pages are only a possible suggestion of the meaning, they must not be taken as inspired, however they are prayerfully prepared and compared with other similar material. There are many ways in which God’s Word can be analyzed and none must be taken in place of the Word of God itself.

1 Corinthians
WRITER. Paul the Apostle.
Written from Ephesus 1 Cor 16:8. Believed to have been written about A.D. 55.
The Situation.
The initial city had been destroyed by the Roman consul Lucious Achaicus in 146 B.C. but because of its position it was soon rebuilt.
The city of Corinth was a wealthy center of business. It was situated on the narrow isthmus (strip of land) that connects mainland Greece to the Peloponnesus.
It was very well placed for business and became very important.
The old city contained the temple of Aphrodities, which offered "sacred prostitutes," the same attitude had spread into the new city, a city which was noted for anything evil. Unfortunately a similar poor morally attitude was to be found in the church.
How did this happen?
The city had numerous teachers of theory, physical and spiritual.
The members of the church allowed the wrong teachings and activities in the city to enter the church life. These different teachings were "added" to the truth of the Gospel, so causing the church to split into groups of "followers of teachers."
As Paul wrote his letter to the Romans while he was in Corinth it could explain his comments in Rom 1:18-32, he could see it from his window as he wrote.
The story of the starting of the church is found in Acts 18:1-17.
The Corinthians are especially rich in spiritual gifts 2 Cor 8:7, but were not using these gifts for God’s glory.

The letter is broken up as follows:
Introduction, greetings 1:1-9
The divisions in the church 1:10 to 4:21.
The disorders in the church 5:1 to 6:20.
The difficulties in the church 7:1 to 15:58.
Practical and personal matters 16:1-24.
